Dagger for in the Field Model 1935
In 1935 the first true Italian fighting knife is introduced, the Pugnale da Marcia Modello 1935 (Dagger for in the Field Model 1935). Its use by Generals, Officers and Other Ranks of the Milizia Volontaria per la Sicurezza Nazionale (Volunteer Militia for the National Security) on the Uniforme di Marcia (Field Uniform) and has officially been sanctioned in 1937.
Officers of the Regio Esercito (Royal Army) are allowed to use the Dagger for in the Field Model 1935 as well.
The grips with four finger grooves are made out of standard wood for Other Ranks, mahogany and cherry wood for NCO’s, black ebony or Bakelite for Officers and ivory for Generals. The grips are attached by two rivets. Many grips are decorated with inscriptions representing names, units, campaigns, dates, mottos, cities and Fascist symbols.
The cross guard has a single upswept quillion and the blade has a length of 21 cm.
The blade features in some cases a motto.
The dagger is made out of standard steel for Other Ranks, a better grade of steel, blued metal fittings and nickel rivets for NCO’s and Officers, while the Dagger for in the Field Model 1935 is made out of chrome or nickel for Generals.
The scabbard of the Dagger for in the Field Model 1935 in use by Other Ranks is black and features at the front an embossed Fasces and the text “M.V.S.N.”. The dagger can be attached to a belt by the use of a rigged steel belt loop at the rear of the scabbard.
The scabbard of the Dagger for in the Field Model 1935 in use by Officers and Generals is plain black or has an embossed Fasces and the text “M.V.S.N.”.
It has a fastening system which can slide to one side and clamped, which allows the dagger to be mounted without the need to remove the belt.
The total length of the dagger, including its scabbard, is 33,3 cm.
