Blue Cap Model 1905

In 1905 the Blauwe Pet Model 1905 (Blue Cap Model 1905) is introduced within the Koninklijk Nederlandsch-Indisch Leger (Royal Netherlands East-Indies Army).
The Blue Cap Model 1905 is made of fine dark blue wool cloth although rougher wool cloth for Manschappen (Troops) is used. The Blue Cap Model 1905 is round-bottomed, has a height of 9,5 cm. at the front and 13,5 cm. at the rear. It has a straight visor and a chin strap both made out of lacquered leather. The chin strap is equipped with a gold or silver plated buckle and a slide passant.

The grade of the owner of the Blue Cap Model 1905 is made visible by several features:

Manschappen (Troops):
- at the bottom a 7 mm wide yellow or white cord ending in a knot at the rear of the dome.
- a cockade pumpkin made out of yellow or white pressed tin surrounded by five rows of torsades made out of pressed tin with a lis and a button. The metal part are gold or silver plated.
- piping around the top of the dome indicating the arm of service.

Onderofficieren (Non-Commissioned Officers):
- at the bottom a 7 mm wide yellow or white silk cord ending in a knot at the rear of the dome.
- a cockade pumpkin made out of orange silk cord surrounded by five rows of yellow or white torsades with a lis and a button. The metal part are gold or silver plated.
- piping around the top of the dome indicating the arm of service.

Subalterne Officieren (Junior Officers):
- at the bottom a 7 mm wide golden or silver cord ending in a knot at the rear of the dome.
- a cockade pumpkin made out of orange silk cord surrounded by five rows of golden or silver torsades with a lis and a button. The metal part are gold or silver plated.
- piping around the top of the dome indicating the arm of service.

Hoofdofficieren (Field Officers):
- at the bottom a 7 mm wide golden or silver cord ending in a knot at the rear of the dome.
- a cockade pumpkin made out of orange silk cord surrounded by five rows of golden or silver torsades with a lis and a button. The metal part are gold or silver plated.
- golden or silver piping around the top of the dome.

Opperofficieren (General Officers):
- at the bottom a 7 mm wide golden or silver cord ending in a knot at the rear of the dome.
- a cockade pumpkin made out of orange silk cord surrounded by five rows of golden or silver torsades with a lis and a button. The metal part are gold or silver plated.
- golden or silver piping around the top of the dome in combination with four upright golden or silver seams, one at the front, one at the rear and one at each side.

The arm of service is indicated by three factors on the Blue Cap Model 1905:
- the color of the piping around the top of the dome
- the color of the torsades with lis of the cockade
- the color of the 7 mm wide cord ending in a knot at the rear of the dome.
The following combinations exist:

Infanterie (Infantry): orange piping and gold or yellow torsades with lis & cord
Artillerie (Artillery): ponceau-red piping and gold or yellow torsades with lis & cord
Genie (Military Engineering): ponceau-red piping and gold or yellow torsades with lis & cord
Cavalerie (Cavalry): ponceau-red piping and silver or white torsades with lis & cord
Militaire Administratie (Military Administration): crimson-red piping and silver or white torsades with lis & cord
Militaire Apotheker (Military Pharmacist): ponceau-red piping and silver or white torsades with lis & cord
Militaire Paardenarts (Military Veterinarian): ponceau-red piping and silver or white torsades with lis & cord
Geneeskundige Dienst (Medical Corps): ponceau-red piping and gold or yellow torsades with lis & cord
Intendance (Distribution Corps): crimson-red piping and gold or yellow torsades with lis & cord
Generale Staf (General Staff): cornflower blue piping (before 1934 orange) and gold or yellow torsades with lis & cord
Topografische Dienst (Topographical Corps): green piping and gold or yellow torsades with lis & cord
Korps Marechaussee (Corps Marechaussee): orange piping and gold or yellow torsades with lis & cord

Adjudanten in Buitengewone Dienst (Aides in Extraordinary Service), which are often members of East-Indies dynasties, and other native military wear on most occasions a native kerchief under the Blue Cap Model 1905. When the Blue Cap Model 1905 is taken off, the kerchief stays on the head as it always has to stay covered.
