Pugnale per Sottufficiale della Milizia Volontaria Sicurezza Nazionale Modello 1939

Dagger for Non-Commissioned Officers of the Volunteer Militia for the National Security Model 1939

The Pugnale per Sottufficiale della Milizia Volontaria Sicurezza Nazionale Modello 1939 (Dagger for Non-Commissioned Officers of the Volunteer Militia for the National Security Model 1939) is adopted by Circular 69 on the 31st of May 1939 and is worn with the Uniforme Ordinaria (Service Uniform) on the grey-green cloth tunic belt, with the Uniforme di Marcia (Field Uniform) on the leather Belt of the type “Sam Brown” and with the Grande Uniforme (Dress Uniform) on the Dress Belt.
When worn with the Coat, the Dagger for Non-Commissioned Officers of the Volunteer Militia for the National Security Model 1939 is brought above the Coat, through a special opening above the left pocket. When worn with the Telo Impermeabilizzato per Tenda Modello 1929 (Waterproof Cover for a Tent Model 1929) it is kept dry under it.

To reduce costs the blade (17 cm. long) and the black painted scabbard of the discontinued Pugnale per Ufficiali della Milizia Volontaria Sicurezza Nazionale Modello 1931 (Dagger Model 1931 for Officers of the Volunteer Militia for the National Security) are re-used. The original suspension system on the scabbard is however replaced by a fastening system which can slide to one side and clamped, which allows the dagger to be mounted without the need to remove the belt.

Newly designed for the Dagger for Non-Commissioned Officers of the Volunteer Militia for the National Security Model 1939 is the handle, consisting of an aluminum cross guard convex shaped, dark brown knurled Bakelite grips hold together by two brass pins and an aluminum head.
The head similar in shape as the head of the Sciabola-baionetta Modello 1891 (Sword-bayonet Model 1891) is interlocked to the blade by a plug of 5 mm. wide.

The total length of the dagger, including its scabbard, is 30 cm..

With Italy’s entry into the war on the 10th of June 1940 the use of the Dagger for Non-Commissioned Officers of the Volunteer Militia for the National Security Model 1939 is discontinued. It is unlikely that it has been distributed to all Non-Commissioned Officers by that time.
