The original Purple Heart (Badge of Military Merit) was originaly established by General George Washington on August 7,1782. It was only awarded to three Revolutionary War Soldiers. Although the award was never abolished it did no proposed again officially until after World War 1. Reinstated in Februari 1932 the Purple Heart is awarded to military personnel who receive wounds as a result of enemy action, and posthumously to soldiers who are killed in action or die of their wounds
