Pugnale per Ufficiali della Milizia Volontaria Sicurezza Nazionale Modello 1931 e 1937

Dagger Model 1931 and 1937 for Officers of the Volunteer Militia for the National Security

The 1935 dress regulations of the Milizia Volontaria Sicurezza Nazionale (Volunteer Militia for the National Security) included the listing of the Pugnale per Ufficiali della Milizia Volontaria Sicurezza Nazionale Modello 1931 (Dagger Model 1931 for Officers of the Volunteer Militia for the National Security) which was introduced in December 1931.
This dress dagger with an eagle head has a total length (including the scabbard) of 30 cm and a blade of 17 cm.
The Model 1931 is made out of aluminum with inlaid ivory handles for Caporali d'Onore (Corporals of Honor) and Generali (Generals) or black Bakelite handles for other officers. In the ivory or Bakelite handles a copper Fasces is inserted on one side.

The dress dagger can be worn with two different scabbards. A nickel colored scabbard was worn on the Full Dress and a black colored scabbard on the Service Dress. The scabbard can be worn on the belt with various fastening systems. Some scabbards are fitted with a leather suspension or a fabric suspension trimmed with gold stripes. In both cases the belt will be put through the suspension.
Another system is a metal fastener on a leather strap.

Both types of scabbard had a different lanyard of 30 cm., although later on also shorter lanyards were worn.
A golden lanyard was worn with the nickel colored scabbard. This lanyard was completely in gold for Corporals of Honor and Generals and gold with black for other officers.
The black scabbard was combined with a black lanyard with the exception of Model 31 daggers worn by Consuls, which had a red lanyard.

Regulation 112 of the 7th of October 1937 commanded the officers of the M.V.S.N. to hand over their Model 1931 dress daggers to their headquarters so they could be modified. The blade of the Model 31 of 17 cm. was extended with 3 cm. to 20 cm. and the dress dagger received a new matching type of scabbard, only in black, with a seperate suspension. These modified daggers and new copies made following this Directive are Pugnale per Ufficiali della Milizia Volontaria Sicurezza Nazionale Modello 1937 (Dagger Model 1937 for Officers of the Volunteer Militia for the National Security).

Originally the Model 1937 was equipped with a copper suspension with two chains of unequal length coming together in an M standing for Mussolini.
The M is mounted with two rings on a fastener with which the dress dagger can be worn on the belt. The fastener is adorned with an eagle and the letters SPQR standing for Senatus Populusque Romanus (The Senate and People of Rome)
The Model 1937 was then fitted with the Sospensione Modello 1938 (Suspension Model 1938). This leather suspension consists of two unequal straps which come together in a leather section with on top a copper M of Mussolini. Connected to this section is the fastener which is adorned with an eagle.
